What I Ate Wednesday: Honolulu

Happy WIAW! Here’s what my Monday looked like this week.

I had to take my breakfast to go – a homemade smoothie made with coconut water, POG (passion orange guava juice; just a splash, for sweetness), fresh mango, frozen chard, spirulina, baobab, half a lemon, chia seeds, and flax-seed oil. I’m working on a review of Kaibae Pure Organic Baobab Fruit Powder, and I like it a lot so far in my morning smoothies! I also took my coffee (with almond milk) with me to go in the car, since I was running late to work.

About two hours later, I got peckish and had a Babybel Light cheese. This is when I noticed that the pictures were coming out blurry, so I turned my phone around to wipe off the camera, and noticed… it’s broken! :( I dropped my phone this weekend and I guess the camera completely smashed. So sad! I will need to figure out what to do because I am leaving for a trip to the East Coast at the end of the month, and I will definitely need my phone camera working!

Lunch was a big, satisfying salad: organic mixed greens, grape tomatoes, half an avocado, salami slices, Parmesan cheese, and Love [pickled] Beets. I made an easy dressing out of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, Himalayan sea salt, black pepper and Penzey’s Fox Point seasoning. So simple, but so good.

My afternoon snack (still at work) was a treat: chocolate-covered macadamia nuts. These cute little packets hold just 5 nuts, which is perfect for people like me who can’t control themselves around chocolate. Not pictured: homemade iced chai tea with almond milk.

Here you can really tell how bad my camera is working :( Sorry for the poor-quality photos!

Unfortunately I didn’t exercise on Monday (I snoozed my alarm until it was too late… which is also why I was running late to work and ate breakfast in the car. I am not usually like this, actually! I like to give myself a whole hour to get ready so I don’t feel rushed, but we’d gone out for some drinks Sunday night so I was a little out of sorts Monday morning). I did some very light stretching and then meditated for 10 minutes. Then Kiyo got home, and I snacked on some peanut butter filled pretzels from Costco (these are addicting!) while dinner warmed up.

Dinner was delicious leftovers from a dinner we had this weekend at Town. I reheated my kabocah squash risotto (with bitter greens, almonds and parmesan) in this adorable little baking dish my dad got me for Christmas. It came in a colorful set, but their perfect for individual portions! I also enjoyed homemade iced hibiscus tea with lemon. I’ve made huge pitchers and bottles of homemade iced tea lately, since summer in Hawaii is so hot. Did you know that you can get some of your daily suggested glasses of water through iced tea? Yes, it counts!

Lately I’ve been craving something sweet after dinner practically every night… it’s no good! Does anyone have tips for minimizing post-meal sugar cravings? Luckily, we had semi-healthy options in the freezer; I mixed raspberry sorbet with Brio dark chocolate ice cream (read my post about this healthy alternative here).
